Orthopaedic Oncology is a specialized branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of bone and soft tissue tumors. The incidence of bone tumors is relatively low compared to other tumors, but the number of cases is increasing and hence having a specialist plays a crucial role in the lives of individuals facing the challenges of musculoskeletal cancers and skeletal metastasis from other primary tumors. An Orthopaedic Oncosurgeon is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who has received Super-speciality training in Oncology of the Musculoskeletal System. Dr. Mishil Sandeep Parikh is one of the few such trained and certified Orthopaedic Oncologists of India. After his post-graduation in Orthopaedic Surgery from D.Y. Patil Medical College, Navi Mumbai, he was trained at the prestigious Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Mumbai, he was for three years and gained extensive experience and skill in the management of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors. He also holds a Short-Fellowship from the University of Florida, USA. He has been practicing exclusive Orthopaedic Oncology since 2017 and now is a Consultant Orthopaedic Oncosurgeon at the famous Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital in South Mumbai. He specialises in Needle Biopsies which help diagnose and facilitate better Limb Salvage techniques. He has vast experience in the management of all types of Malignant and Benign, Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors, and Skeletal Metastases. He is well versed with Limb Salvage techniques with the use of Megaprosthesis, Nail Cement Spacer, Biological Methods (ECRT, Allografts, Bone Transpositions) and 3D Printing. He has a vast experience in treatment of Pathological fractures and Spinal Cord Compression due to metastasis. He has successfully performed around 1500 procedures in the last 5 years. Apart from clinical acumen, he is also academically oriented and has authored many publications in national and international journals. He is a regular faculty at national and international conferences in MSK Oncology. He is very passionate about his work but also has a compassionate side towards the economically challenged strata of the society. He offers free services in many Medical Colleges and Trust hospitals across the country. His Motto is “ No patient in need of his services should go untreated because of monetary issues.” He also believes in promoting education for the young and upcoming orthopaedic surgeons in the country. At present he is the Chair of the Young Surgeon’s Initiative by the International Society of Limb Salvage. Also he is a founder member of the Sarcoma Education Society, a Trust that promotes educational activities. He has been striving hard to create awareness about the rare specialty of musculoskeletal tumors among the medical professionals as well as society at large. He is involved in teaching programs like CMEs, Cadaveric Courses, Online Webinars etc. The happiness on the faces of his patients and students is a testimony to the good work he has been doing. In conclusion, orthopaedic oncology is an emerging field in India, and the management of bone & soft tumors requires a multidisciplinary approach led by the Orthopaedic Oncosurgeon. The availability of advanced imaging techniques, biopsy facilities, and treatment options is now not limited to big cities but possible everywhere in the country.
